The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded more than $1.4 million in housing assistance for young people who are transitioning out of foster care and at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Over the past year, the Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) initiative has awarded $12.7 million in 45 states to provide rental assistance and other services to help this population work toward their education and employment goals and reach self-sufficiency.

Under HUD guidance published in January on Fostering Stable Housing Opportunities (FSHO), foster youth can receive up to an additional 24 months of voucher assistance , for a maximum of 60 months.
