HUD Makes $30M Available for PHAs to Prevent Homelessness After Foster Care
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that it will make available $30 million in non-competitive funding for public housing authorities (PHAs) through the Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) Initiative.
FYI makes housing choice vouchers (HCV) available to PHAs for young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who left foster care or will leave foster care in the next 90 days and are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. The PHAs must have a partnership with public child welfare agencies.
PHAs can request the funding on a rolling basis. Read PIH Notice 2023-04 for more on the process and eligibility requirements.
As part of the Biden-Harris administration's goal to reduce homelessness 25% by 2025, set by All In: The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness , the president’s Fiscal Year 2024 budget request includes $9 billion in new mandatory funding to establish a housing voucher program for all youth aging out of foster care.
