This month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $686,019 for the state of Iowa and the city of Des Moines to prevent or address homelessness after extreme storms, flooding, and tornadoes in May.

Through HUD’s Rapid Unsheltered Survivor Housing (RUSH) Program, the grant awards will help communities provide rapid assistance for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and historically excluded from federal disaster assistance.

HUD’s RUSH funding will allow communities to:

  • Provide emergency shelter, rapid rehousing, financial assistance for move-in costs, and supportive services for people who were experiencing homelessness before the extreme weather
  • Invest in homelessness prevention, utility assistance, and supportive services to meet urgent needs of people who became at risk of homelessness after the extreme weather
  • Provide up to 24 months of rental assistance for people who faced homelessness before and after the storms
