The Department of Education approved every state's plans for American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ARP ESSER) funds and distributed all $122 billion to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico before the end of December.

These funds are critical to helping states and local districts safely keep schools open for in-person learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, including responding to recent challenges arising from the Omicron variant.

These funds can also be used to identify children and youth experiencing homelessness, to provide them with wraparound services, and to administer the assistance needed to enable them to attend school and fully participate in school activities. For more information on how to use ARP ESSER funds to address student and family homelessness, read USICH's guide to American Rescue Plan funding.
