This week, the Federal Transit Administration ( FTA ) announced $13 million in new grants that can help communities address homelessness through transit planning.

In support of House America —the federal-local partnership launched by HUD and USICH to address the homeleness crisis—the FTA is “reviewing opportunities to prioritize TOD planning grants in areas of high incidence rates of homelessness.”

The Pilot Program for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Planning aims to improve public transportation by providing funding to local communities to integrate land use and transportation planning with a new fixed guideway or core capacity transit capital investment. Local grantees must use the funding to:

  1. Improve economic development and ridership
  2. Foster multimodal connectivity and accessibility
  3. Improve transit access for pedestrian and bicycle traffic
  4. Engage the private sector
  5. Identify infrastructure needs
  6. Enable mixed-use development near transit stations

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law increased funding by 38% for the TOD Planning program and will send nearly $70 million to communities across the country over the next five years.

Applications are due by July 25.
