Congressional Hearing on Family and Youth Homelessness

On December 15th, the Insurance Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee of the Committee on Financial Services held a hearing on H.R. 3.2 titled, "The Homeless Children and Youth Act of 2011: Proposals to Promote Economic Independence for Homeless Children and Youth." USICH Executive Director Barbara Poppe was asked to testify on the implementation of Opening Doors and the HEARTH Act, as well as progress made on developing a common federal vocabulary on housing status.
On the hearing’s first panel, the Members heard from six youth who previously experienced homelessness or are currently experiencing homelessness. Poppe testified on the second panel and was joined by HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary for Special Needs, Commissioner Seth Diamond from the New York City Department of Homeless Services, Government Accountability Office Director Alicia Puente Cackley, and other experts.
